Golf Takes Second at Dowling September Shootout

Riverhead, N.Y. - The Adelphi University golf team placed second in the 16-team field at the Dowling College September Shootout completed on Monday at Long Island National Golf Course in Riverhead, New York. The Panthers (304-308 - 612) were led by junior Brant Kummerfeld (74-74 - 148) and freshman Matt Demeo (77-71 - 148), who both finished in a tie for fourth place in the 79-player field.

Assumption (303-302 - 605) edged the Panthers by seven strokes for the team title. Pace (303-311 - 614) finished third, St. Thomas Aquinas (309-313 - 622) was fourth and UMass-Lowell (304-320 - 624) rounded out the top-five.

Bobby Leopold (74-72 - 146) of Bentley won medalist honors, one stroke ahead of Michael Dominici (72-75 - 147) of Pace and Rob Youker (74-73 - 147) of Assumption and two ahead of Kummerfeld and Demeo. Blustery conditions on Monday raised the average day-two score for the field to 81.38.

Senior Jantzen Vargas shot 76-78 - 154 to place 15th, keeping alive a streak of nine consecutive top-15 tournament showings dating back to Fall, 2006.

Demeo fired three birdies on Monday en route to his even-par round of 71, the low round of the tournament, while Kummerfeld was as low as two-under par during his second-day round, before finishing three over.

Junior Oliver Hudesman (77-85 - 162) finished tied for 42nd and senior Mauricio Saavedra (79-85 - 164) tied for 49th among the 79 individual competitors.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, September 23, at the ECAC Division II Men's Golf Championship at Drumlins Golf Course in Syracuse, New York.
