Women's Cross-Country Captures ECC Title, Men Place Second

 
 

 
Ify Anene captured the ECC women's individual title.

Bronx, N.Y. - The Adelphi University cross-country team traveled to Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday, October 21 to participate in the East Coast Conference Championship meet. The women scored 31 points to capture their fifth title in the past eight years and second in a row, while the men placed second, falling to NYIT by seven points (37-30).

The women's team garnered a race low 31 points by placing five runners in the top-10, including individual champion and ECC Runner of the Year Ify Anene. Anene took home top honors in the women's race, covering the 5k course in 19:21.

Danielle Connor was the second Adelphi finisher across the line and third overall, stopping the clock at 20:40. The Panthers then took home 8th through 14th place, was as Jennifer Malenovsky (21:16), Barbara Green (21:19), Meghan Farrell (21:23), Jenilee Fuertes (21:26), Melissa Coelho (21:33), Heather Troutman (21:35), and Danielle Matteo (21:36) crossed the line.

Green took Rookie of the Year honors as the top finishing newcomer, placing ninth overall while Anene and Connor earned first-team all-conference honors and Malenovsky, Green, Farrell, Fuertes, Coelho, Troutman and Matteo helped Adelphi to a clean sweep of second-team honors.

Head Coach Adam Siepiola was named Women's Coach of the Year for the second season in a row after guiding the Panthers to the title.

Matt Dispensa was Adelphi's first runner across the line, placing second overall in a time of 27:12 and was followed by Ryan Pezzulo, who placed third (27:23) and earned Rookie of the Year honors. Carlos Techera was the third Adelphi finisher (28:02), placing eighth, with Mike Dorman just three seconds later in 10th. Tom Eickelberg rounded out Adelphi's top-five, placing 14th in 28:22.

Dispensa and Pezzulo earned first-team honors, while Techera, Dorman and Eickelberg captured second-team accolades.

The Panthers will return to action on Saturday, November 3 at the Division II Northeast Regional, which will be held at Van Cortlandt Park.
