Millersville, P.A. - The Panther volleyball team headed to Millersville, Pennsylvania to participate in the two-day Spiketacular Tournament on September 5 and 6, hosted by Millersville University. They came out on top against Fairmont State and West Chester on day one and continued the win streak on day two beating Wilmington (DE), but fell to Shippensburg in a tight match.

Fairmont:
On September 5, volleyball took on Fairmont State in the first of four matches in the Spiketacular Tournament. The Panthers dropped the first set, 21-25, but then came back to win three straight (25-23, 25-18, 25-16) behind the strength of freshman Hilary Pavels' 15 kills, 17 digs and four aces. Also helping the Panthers was senior Samantha Johnston who posted nine kills and 17 digs.

West Chester:
The Panthers took on the Golden Rams of West Chester University in the evening session of the Tournament on Friday, September 5. The two teams battled back and forth, both unwilling to give up the first set. It was the Rams who came out on top, edging the Panthers in a hard fought, first set, 29-27. The next two sets were not nearly as close as the Panthers bounced back, winning 25-19 and 25-11. With the help of a double-double by Pavels (15 kills, 21 digs), Johnston (13 kills, 22 digs), and sophomore Heather Mau (52 assists, 14 digs), Adelphi closed out the match 25-23.

Wilmington (DE):
Adelphi started the second day of the tournament against the Wilmington Wildcats. The Panthers jumped out to an early two set lead (25-13, 25-15), but the Wildcats held off a three set sweep by taking the third set, 25-23. Their momentum continued into the fourth set (19-25), forcing a fifth and final set to determine the match. 14 kills by senior Kathleen Carney gave the Panthers the edge as they were victorious in the fifth set, winning 15-10. Mau had a double-double (36 assists, 10 digs) while Pavels collected 24 digs, and junior Amy Williams had 22.

Shippensburg:
The fourth and final match of the tournament ended with a match against the Raiders of Shippensburg. The Panthers jumped out to a two set lead (26-24, 25-20), but the Raiders bounced back by taking the next two sets (22-25, 23-25) to send the match into a fifth and final set. Even with Johnston (12 kills, 18 digs) and Pavels' (20 kills, 19 digs) double-double, the Panthers fell just short (13-15) and ended their seven game win streak, suffering their first loss of the season.

Adelphi ended the Tournament 3-1, bringing their overall record to 7-1. Senior Samantha Johnston and Junior Jennifer McKenna were named to the All-Tournament team. The Panthers travel to Flushing, New York on Tuesday, September 9, to take on the Knights of Queens College in their first conference matchup at 7pm.
