Garden City, N.Y. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced today that a record 353 teams earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2007-2008 season, including the Adelphi University women's volleyball team. The number smashes the previous high mark of 308 schools set a year ago. The Panthers were one of just 39 NCAA Division II schools to receive the honor, joining the University of Bridgeport as the only East Coast Conference representatives on the list. Adelphi set schools record for wins in a season (27) and longest winning streak (11) during the 2007 season. The Panthers also earned the programs first NCAA Division II Tournament bid. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Adelphi opens the 2008 season on August 29 when they travel to Gaffney, South Carolina to compete in the Limestone Labor Day Tournament. |
